Europe has an urgent interest in a peaceful solution to the Sudan crisis

“A possible escalation of the conflict in Sudan would have unforeseeable consequences. This can only be avoided by bringing the parties concerned to the negotiating table,” said MEP György Hölvényi on Thursday’s plenary vote on the political crisis in Sudan.

In his written contribution, the EPP Group Coordinator in the Committee on Development said: “The precarious security situation threatens the stability of the whole region. The escalation and widening of the conflict would have unforeseeable consequences, which can only be avoided by bringing the parties concerned to the negotiating table. We therefore expect the EU’s external policy to be prudent and to work more closely with regional partners.” The politician added: “In the tense atmosphere of the civil war in Ethiopia, the EU needs regional allies to act effectively to ensure security.”

On the worsening humanitarian situation, MEP György Hölvényi underlined that Sudan, with a population of 43 million, currently hosts more than one million refugees and a further 3 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDP). The conflict in northern Ethiopia has led to more than 60,000 Ethiopian refugees arriving in Sudan. He stressed: “The supply of these masses has already tested Sudan’s capacities to the limit. The role of international organisations is therefore crucial, and the EU’s support is indispensable.”
